Dental Fillings

Generally there are two types of dental fillings: composite resin and silver amalgam, each of which has different characteristics and indications for use.

Composite or tooth-colored fillings are essentially a combination of glass particles and strong plastic that resembles tooth structure. Composites come in many shades to match your particular tooth and will blend very naturally with your tooth to give a beautiful esthetic result. They are bonded to teeth via an adhesive.

Amalgams are usually the most durable filling material. Amalgams are a mixture of silver, copper, mercury and tin, and can be used in many clinical situations where composites do not perform so well. That said, a significant downside to amalgams is their dark appearance.
